He has been a faculty member of the department since October 1999, progressively advancing through the ranks of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor before attaining his current position as Professor. Dr. Barman received his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Applied Physics and Electronics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, in 1994 and 1995, respectively, securing First Class with Second Position in both programs. He earned his Ph.D. in Bio and Brain Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea, in 2008, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Soo-Young Lee at the Computational NeuroSystem Lab (CNSL). Research Interests Dr. Barman's research focuses on the application of Artificial Neural Networks, Brain Engineering, Bioinformatics, Text Mining, and Information Extraction. His published work spans a range of interdisciplinary areas including Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) for text mining and gene expression analysis, cognitive radio systems, MRI image segmentation, human emotion recognition, and machine learning-based disease prediction. He has authored or co-authored more than 27 peer-reviewed journal articles and 10 international conference papers, with contributions appearing in IEEE, Springer LNCS, and other reputed venues. He currently supervises doctoral research in machine learning-based mental health prediction and wireless communication systems. Teaching Dr. Barman teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including Neural Network Theory and Applications, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, Data Mining and Bioinformatics, Signals and Systems, and Mathematics for Engineering. Academic and Administrative Roles Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Barman has held several leadership and administrative responsibilities at Islamic University. He served as Head of the Department of ICT (2010–2013), Director of the Islamic University Computer Center (2017–2019), and as Proctor and Student Advisor (2019–2021). From 2011 to 2014, he served as Sub-project Manager for a Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP), funded by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh and the World Bank, focused on establishing an IT Research and Resource Center at Islamic University. During his doctoral studies at KAIST (2006–2007), Dr. Barman served as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering, contributing to courses including Bio-Electronic Lab and Bioinformatics. He was also involved in several research projects at KAIST, including wireless capsule endoscope image processing, artificial brain-based text and document categorization, and the NIP (Non-Ink Pen) development project. Dr. Barman has delivered keynote addresses at national workshops and seminars on networking and digital technology, and remains actively engaged in advancing applied computing research in Bangladesh.
