Professor
Dr. Md. Zahidul Islam is a Professor in the Department of Information and Communication Technology at Islamic University, where he has served since 2003. A Senior Member of IEEE (SMIEEE), he has held leadership roles in the IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter, including Vice Chair (Activity), Secretary, and currently Vice Chair (Technical). He is also the Founder and Counselor of the IEEE Student Branch at Islamic University. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Chonnam National University, South Korea, supported by a research internship at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. His research interests include computer vision, medical imaging, intelligent robotics, and AI-driven healthcare solutions. He leads the Computer Vision and Intelligent Interfacing Lab (CVIIL), ICT Innovation Lab, and Biomedical Robotics, AI & Imaging Network (BRAIN) Lab. He also holds an international patent on robust particle resampling for visual tracking. Dr. Md. Zahidul Islam has served as Head of the Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Director of the Central Laboratory, and Sub-Project Manager of the Digital Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab). He is an Evaluator for BAETE under IEB and a Visiting Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University, Australia. With 80+ scholarly publications, extensive research supervision, and involvement in national and international funded projects, he continues to contribute to advancing innovation and research excellence in ICT and biomedical engineering.
Focus on robust visual object tracking, multi-cue synthesis with particle filters, 3D object recognition via chamfer matching, and real-time motion analysis for human-computer interaction (e.g., adaptive template-based tracking in dynamic scenes).
Development of algorithms for articulated body pose recognition using multiclass SVM and CNNs, eye and iris center tracking with occlusion correction, and upper body gesture recognition for human-robot interfaces.
AI-driven segmentation and detection of prostate cancer using deep learning on bi-parametric MRI, radiomics for grade classification, and lung cancer identification from CT scans with uncertainty-driven U-Nets.
Network-based analysis of disease comorbidities (e.g., psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and obesity links), molecular biomarker identification via GWAS and WGS, and pathway exploration for COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes.
Evolutionary approaches for function optimization, hybrid clustering to mitigate empty clusters, and integration with particle filters for enhanced resampling in visual tracking (e.g., attenuated sequential importance resampling).
